Transitional Autumn

Being in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we get to enjoy spectacular fall foliage right outside our doorstep.

But, being in central Virginia, our autumn foliage is just beginning to get underway.

I love the few weeks right before our autumn temperatures start to color our leaves.  During this short window in early autumn, there are subtle signs everywhere at our farm indicating that summer has departed and that autumn foliage will soon dominate our landscape:

The air is crisp and clear

The sky is brilliantly blue

The shadows are getting longer

Berries and seeds are plentiful

Spectacular autumn flowers bask in the sun

Pumpkins and gourds are ready for Halloween

[Believe or not, these two cute little pumpkins are gifts from one of our cows ...]

Flutter-bys are enjoying the autumn nectar

Our glorious autumn is just around the corner.
Have a fabulous weekend,
                       Christa

  1. Oh my goodness, your photos are like poetry for the eyes! The most incredible, well besides all the lovely flowers, would be to have that land where the horses roam and the fences go on and on around it all!

Your beautiful farm is always 'in season', and your photos today exemplify this point, with the beginnings of fall foliage, ambient, autumn hued flowers, and pops of orange from the pumpkins and gourdes! Thanks for sharing your spectacular surroundings!

    Happy October!

  20. You have a beautiful property with flowers and autumn colours. It was photos like your beauty berries that made me search out a shrub to see if it would grow in our gardening zone. I was told it would likely die back to the ground each year like a perennial but with the insulating snow of last winter, it didn't die back a lot. I'm glad to hear the birds will eat the berries, it's planted in my bird garden for that reason.
