Nor'easter Effect

Although we are far from the coast, last weekend, a nor'easter brought howling winds and thick dark clouds to our farm in central Virginia.  The gusty winds rattled our old farmhouse windows all night.  I would have been very worried had our farmhouse not withstood such forces for more than 150 years.

With this anger, the storm cast sun rays and shadows on our glorious autumn landscape and transformed it into a breathtaking and surreal panorama.

After a long night of gusty winds, the sun slowly peeked out from under the thick dark clouds the next morning.

I thought for sure all of our flowers had been totally shattered.  To my surprise, with a little shelter, the dahlias, lantanas, and chrysanthemums swayed happily in the crisp morning breeze.

[PS:  These three varieties are extremely resilient and don't mind the cold temperature too much.   As you can see, they faired quite well after a whole night of gusty winds and temperatures in the 30's F.   You might want to add them to your gardens next spring.]

Not only was I happy to see that some of my flowers survived the storm unscathed, I was elated to witness the appearance of a huge rainbow that lit up our wide open sky.

Every day is a glorious day.
Enjoy your day,
Christa

  23. Such beautiful farm country, and I'm glad to hear they built your house so well 150 years ago. The fall colors in the forest photos are amazing, the purple and magenta colors go so beautifully with the yellows. Trees here are not so colorful.

  24. Stunning photos, Christa. Autumn over your way is gorgeous. We just don't get those intense fire colours over here in the autumn. I love your dahlias. I always think they're the divas of the flower garden: really dramatic and very beautiful, but sadly they never seem to survive with me. It must have been lovely sheltering indoors knowing that you were safe and leaving the weather to do its worst outside. All the best for now, Bonny

  26. Your farm is in an ideal location for the beauty of nature around it and your house was probably built quite soundly, unlike our subdivision home. (built for quantity, not quality)
