Think Heat ... Imagine Colors ...

O.K., enough of this cold winter landscape!  It's time to infuse ourselves with the warmth of tropical colors. Come along with me south of the equator and soak in the brilliant sun and immerse yourself in the vibrant colors that dominate the landscape there.  I am going to limit the number of famous sites in this post and focus on photos of animals and flowers.

Our daughters Jess and Katy at the Iguazu Falls (Brazil)

We are going to make three stops: Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Iguazu Falls (Brazil), and the southern coast of Uruguay.  I will first give you a little glimpse into each of these places, and then I will treat your eyes with the brilliant tropical colors that abound there.

Bird nest, Iguazu Falls, Brazil

Our first morning in Rio de Janeiro, we were greeted by this breathtaking sunrise.  Ahhh... what hospitality!

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio was a fantastic city with beautiful beaches, gorgeous people, delectable food, scenic vistas, and intriguing architecture.

Iquazu Falls simply took our breath away ...

The southern coast of Uruguay boasts a stunning seaside landscape and beaches.  It's a place where you wish you didn't have to leave.

Wildlife in Brazil and Uruguay

As Bob and I were relaxing by our hotel pool in Iguazu Falls, a few birds with shimmering blackish plumage dive-bombed and skimmed the surface of the pool water.  We remarked to each other that they behaved just like our purple martins on our farm pond in Virginia.  As it turned out, they were indeed purple martins.  We learned that these tiny little guys, only about 7 1/2 inches (19 cm) long and weighing about 1.9 ounces (55 g), winter in Brazil (purplemartin.org).  (Haha, wouldn't it be funny if some of "our" martins were somewhere nearby?)

I also saw a few monarch butterflies (wouldn't it be great if one of "ours" (see my 9/18/2014 post) were nearby too?).

In addition to these two familiar winged friends, we saw some interesting looking animals and fantastically beautiful birds and butterflies.  Here are the ones I was able to snap with my camera.

Interesting Critters

Electrifying Birds

They look so happy and totally unconcerned ...

Captivating Butterflies

Dazzling Flowers

Not to be outdone by the birds and butterflies, the flowers flaunt their shapes and colors.

Watching the sunset in Punta del Este, Uruguay, was the perfect way to end our fabulous vacation.

Mother Nature sure did her magic in this part of the world.
I hope these fabulous colors warmed you up a bit.  Hang in there, spring will come soon.

Good thing there is that nice sturdy fencing. The birds, the flowers, the animals, were so wonderful. I really enjoyed looking at everything here today.

  37. Amazingly gorgeous photos, what a place to visit, it must be hard to leave. They certainly don't need spring there, it looks like the flowers and fun never cease. The birds are so amazing, and the butterflies, particularly the black and white one, and the fantastic red and black spider with the black and white striped legs. I would like to stay in the white house on the cliff, too. What fun!
